Interpreting Stats Reports

After a tournament, you may wish to look up the statistics report, whether to verify its accuracy, compare yourself or your team to others, or to identify areas of strength and weakness. You can find a report by either finding the tournament in question on this page, or searching for the tournament name on the Quizbowl Resource Center. You’ll see a list titled “Stat Reports” on the right side of the window. Some tournaments may take a few days to upload statistics to the database.

Some tournaments will present a single stat report while others will also show the stat report from preliminary rounds alone or from playoff rounds alone. Examining stat reports from only prelim rounds can be useful because every team plays a balanced mix of both strong and weak teams in the morning rounds, whereas afternoon rounds divide the teams into groups by skill.

After clicking on a link to a stat report, you’ll see a horizontal menu on the top with links such as “Standings” and “Team Detail.” Let’s walk you through it.

If you’re trying to compare your team’s performance to others, click on “Standings.” You can see your rank, your win rate (under Pct, short for “Win Percentage”), the average number of points your team scored in a game (under PPG, short for “points per game”), and your total number of negs (under -5).

If the tournament has powers, you can find the number of powers your team earned under 15. If the tournament has bonuses, you can find the average number of points your team scored per bonus under PPB. Depending on the statistics software the tournament’s statkeeper used, you may see other values such as G/N, or “gets per neg,” the number of tossups your team answered correctly divided by the number answered incorrectly.

If you’re trying to evaluate your individual performance, click on “Individuals.” The columns are the same as those in “Standings.” Remember when interpreting power and neg counts to consider the number of games played, since players who play more games hear more tossups total.

If you’re trying to compare teammates within your or another team, click on “Team Detail.” This can add insight to the “Individuals” rankings, since players with stronger teammates have a harder time scoring than players playing solo or with weaker teammates.

If you’re trying to examine the result of a specific game, click on “Scoreboard” and use your browser’s search function to find the games your team played. You will be able to see the number of powers, 10-point conversions, and negs each player earned over the course of the game.

Here is a breakdown of each statistic:
